How to use the Project Resource Center
File formats
The Project Resource Center may include documents of many different types that you can download and view on your own computer. How you open or view the document depends on the type of document and which applications are available on your own computer.
For example, popular image formats, such as GIF (.gif) and JPEG (.jpg) files, can be displayed directly in your browser window. Other document types, such as QuickTime movies, Adobe Acrobat documents (PDF files), or Microsoft Office documents such as Word (.doc) or Excel (.xls) files, may require other applications or special browser plug-ins to view. If you do not already have the ability to view certain document types, use the links below to find the necessary applications and plug-ins, or contact your project manager for assistance.
Tip: When viewing a list of documents in the Project Resource Center, if your web browser application is configured to understand each type of document, you can simply click on each link to download. Depending on the configuration of your web browser, the document will be automatically opened in the appropriate application, or you will be prompted to save it in a folder on your computer. You can then open it as you would any other document.
Microsoft Office documents
Microsoft supplies free browser plug-ins and desktop applications that allow you to open Microsoft Office documents, including Word or Excel files, even if you do not have these applications. Go to the Microsoft Office Download Center and search for "Converters and Viewers" for the product you are interested in.
Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) documents
Adobe Systems' Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular way to exchange files that look great when printed. Adobe supplies a free plug-in and desktop application called Acrobat Reader that allows you to view and print PDF files. Go to Adobe's download section and download Acrobat for your system.
Apple QuickTime movies
Most web browsers include a plug-in to view QuickTime movies in the browser window. If you do not have the ability to view QuickTime movies, you can download the plug-in or a stand-alone viewer application from Apple Computer's QuickTime Download page.
Autodesk AutoCAD and Inventor files
Autodesk, Inc. offers a product for Windows called Autodesk DWF Viewer that allows you to view and print basic design drawing formats. There is no charge for the Autodesk DWF Viewer product.
